From Preventive Science To Preventive Healthcare

Dr Jau-Fei Chen is a visionary scientist with extraordinary insight. Since founding E. Excel International in 1987, she continues to share her message of prevention, educating the world about the science of Nutritional Immunology. In 2005, she took preventive science a step further by setting up the Excellence Healthcare clinic in Singapore.

Over the years, Dr Jau-Fei Chen has received numerous awards and international recognition. For instance, the US Junior Chamber of Commerce named Dr Chen as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans, and March 8, 1996 was declared Jau-Fei Chen Day in the state of California by Governor Pete Wilson.

Dr Chen was also invited on many occasions to meet with the leaders of various countries. In addition, she honors invitations to lecture at venues worldwide, among them, scientific organizations, medical universities as well as public seminars and health conventions. By pouring her heart and soul into her research, Dr Chen has demonstrated a selfless desire to better the health of mankind. Her efforts were not begun with rewards in mind; nevertheless, rewarded she has been by international organizations and governments.

Having specialized in Cardiology for over 16 years, Dr. Albert Chan currently holds the position of Medical Director and Consultant Cardiologist at Excellence Healthcare where he leads a team of dedicated professionals.

He possesses U.S. board certifications in Internal Medicine (1987), Cardiovascular Disease (1991 and re-certified 2001) and Nuclear Cardiology (1996).

In 1980, Dr. Chan earned his B.A. degree at the State University of New York at Binghamton. Propelled by his keen interest and the opportunity to contribute to the field of medicine, he enrolled at the New York University School of Medicine and graduated with a Medical Doctorate degree. Thereafter, he took up Internal Medicine Residency at the University Hospital of New York at Stony Brook from 1984 to 1987.

Dr. Chan's entry into the specialized discipline of cardiology began in 1987. It was in 1989 that he obtained completed a Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Presbyterian Hospital Philadelphia Heart Institute. Dr. Chan amassed extensive knowledge in cardiovascular medicine at the St. John Riverside Hospital in New York where he held a nine-year term as Consultant Cardiologist from 1989 to 1997.

Sitting as Visiting Assistant Professor in Medicine at Columbia University from 1997 to 2000, he contributed immensely to the study of cardiovascular medicine. Upon arrival in Singapore in 1997, Dr. Chan was Director to the Non-Invasive Cardiology Department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. To date, Dr. Chan holds medical licenses for New York and Singapore.

Originally from the United States, Dr. Chan is a fluent speaker of English Mandarin and Cantonese. He takes great pleasure in travelling and enjoys reading. In his spare time, Dr. Chan indulges in the experience of wining and dining.

As the Medical Director at Excellence Healthcare, Dr. Steve Seah heads the Ophthalmology & Presbyopia LASIK Centre.

Dr. Seah's appointment as President of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology and Head of the Glaucoma Service at the Singapore National Eye Centre are just two of the numerous positions he holds in the medical arena of Ophthalmology in Singapore. He is an Honorary Scientific Expert Advisor to the Tianjin Eye Center at the Tianjin Medical University in China and a recognised member of The Glaucoma Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology (ICO).

With an M.B.B.S. and a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore, Dr. Seah proceeded to complete his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

As a proficient surgeon in glaucoma and cataract surgery, Dr. Seah has conducted live surgery demonstrations in Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Milan and Singapore, and contributed invaluable research to the discipline of Ophthalmology. An EXCO member of the Asian-Oceanic Glaucoma Society since 1996, he was the organizing chairman of the Inaugural Scientific Meeting of the AGOS which took place in Singapore in 1997. He also sat on the advisory board for the AOGS Congress 2003 and co-chaired the Global Glaucoma Research at the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the Association of International Glaucoma Societies (AIGS) in 2004.

Now elected as the chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 21st Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress in Singapore in 2006, this is the second largest ophthalmology congress to be held in Singapore since the International Congress of Ophthalmology in 1990 and attendance is expected to exceed 2,500.

With 19 years of experience in medical practice, Dr. Seah shares his extensive wealth of knowledge as a teacher, speaker and contributor. Presently, he is clinical senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore, and oversees the SNEC Advanced Trainee Subspeciality Programme and fellowship training programme for Glaucoma subspecialty. Apart from organising meetings both regionally and internationally, and speaking at innumerable global conferences/symposia, he is a key reviewer for publications worldwide and sits on the editorial boards of several ophthalmic journals.

Honoured for his contribution to the medical fraternity, Dr. Seah was awarded the Special Achievement Award for Singapore National Eye Centre in 1997 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in 2001.

Dr. Seah is currently the commanding officer of the second Combat Support Hospital in the Singapore Armed Forces Army Medical Services. He was awarded the Distinguished Graduate in First National Service Command and Staff Course in 2000, and holds a rank of Major.

Aged 45, Dr. Seah is a proud father of two sons and insists on spending quality time with his family despite his heavy work commitments. With a passion for watches, cars and music, he also enjoys outdoor sporting activities like tennis and jogging.

Formerly, the Director of the Heart Failure Programme with the National Healthcare Group, Dr Kenneth Ng, a US Board Certified Cardiologist, has joined Excellence Healthcare. For this Heart Failure Specialist who has been in practice since 1992, he saw the importance of how preventative medicine would have helped many of his patients overcome a non-compulsory death sentence. Hence, joining the multi-disciplinary clinic is in line with his aim to first prevent and only then treat.

Dr Ng is the one responsible for the establishment of the surgical and mechanical assist device therapy programmes for heart failure patients, currently in use at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Despite his engagements, he has managed to run a successful clinic, providing optimum patient care.

Highly recognized as an expert in his field within the ASEAN region, he not only regularly publishes research articles on heart failure in peer reviewed international cardiology journals, he is also being regularly invited to give talks on heart failure at both local and regional conferences as well as the American Congress of Cardiology Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr Ng is currently involved in the education of medical students and trainee doctors through his appointment as a clinical tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore. He is an accredited instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and travels to Malaysia and Brunei where he conducts training on the subject.

In his free time, the extroverted gentleman, enjoys scuba diving, and horse riding and as well as finer things in life such as music and traveling.

Armed with 13 years of experience and sharing Excellence Healthcare’s believes in a patients’ first culture, Dr Jimmy Lim has joined the multi-disciplinary clinic as a consultant cardiologist where he is able to further pursue his love of saving lives when it matters.

Dr Lim did his undergraduate training in the United Kingdom in the mid nineties and subsequently chose to return to Singapore for his further specialist training. Later, his post-graduate training took him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA where he did further training in interventional cardiology, preventative cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation.

As the former director of the Invasive Cardiac Laboratory at Tan Tock Seng from 2004 - 2007, Dr Lim was the highest volume operator in Singapore for Primary Angioplasty; which is a form of treatment that involves the use of balloons and stents for the treatment of patients with Acute Heart Attacks.

With specific interest that includes early detection of coronary artery disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus and their role in heart disease. He is also a visiting consultant to the National Heart Centre where he performs coronary angiography and angioplasty.

His knowledge and expertise are also evident in the numerous papers that he authored on hypertension and the importance of exercise in the prevention of heart disease. In his free time, Dr Lim enjoys wining and dining his wife with special home cooked meals from the heart.

Dr Raymond Lee who has been practising since the very early nineties has joined the Excellence Healthcare Cardiology Team. Dr Lee did his undergraduate training in South Australia and United Kingdom and thereafter, obtained his specialist training in Singapore.

Dr Lee’s speciality includes early detection of coronary heart diseases and hypertension with specific interest in diagnostic investigation. Being an expert in echocardiography, Dr Lee’s work requires him to not just work with his patients but other cardiologists in the investigations and accurate diagnosis of coronary diseases. Being in a speciality that requires him to constantly be updated on the very latest technology; he is not only apt with the investigation of coronary conditions with common equipment such as the treadmill and ECG, he is able to utilize technology, in employing more complex methods of investigations with the doubutamine stress echocardiography, or even Cardiac CT and Carotid Artery Ultrasound for a more in depth look into a patient’s condition.

Having presented in conferences both regionally and internationally, Dr Lee has been a clinical tutor with Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Nanyang Polytechnic. He was in fact with the former since 2000, where he served as Consultant Cardiologist. Involved in many cardiology related publications, he has also been actively heading or has been involved with researches locally, regionally and internationally; the latest international trial being in the year 2007.

A lover of the outdoors, he enjoys travelling whilst indulging in his other passion of photography. During moments of quietness, he enjoys catching up with friends and family over good food and drinks.

Dr. Willy Chang graduated from the University of Queensland, Australia in 1985. He began his career as a general dentist, working in a group private practice at Bunbury, Western Australia. Subsequently, he moved back to live Hong Kong where he set up his own private practice and ran it for 9 years.

During this period, he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Surgery (Conservative Dentistry) at the University of Hong Kong Prince Philip Dental Hospital. With a keen interest in prosthodontics and a strong aspiration to become a specialist in this field, he gave up his established practice in Hong Kong to pursue specialist training in the United States.

In 2003, he obtained a Master of Science degree and a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Maryland, USA. He continued his training at the Center for Implantology, Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, USA and completed an Implantology Fellowship Program in 2004. On returning to Asia, he joined and worked at the National Univeristy of Singapore Faculty of Dentistry as Assistant Professor, teaching both the undergraduate and postgraduate students between 2004 and 2007.

He also practised as a specialist prosthodontist in the Dental Centre of the National University Hospital. Dr. Chang is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

His extensive overseas experiences enable him to connect with patients from different cultures and walks of life. Besides his private practice at Excellence Healthcare, he also lectures part-time for the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the National University of Singapore. His specialties include custom smile makeovers, full-mouth reconstructions and dental implants for missing teeth.

Outside work, Dr. Chang enjoys travelling as well as building and painting military models. His passion for dentistry is also evident in his hobby of collecting vintage and out-of-print dental textbooks.
